Use of Gabion Baskets for Military Purposes

Military Use of Gabion Baskets (Cages)

In the Middle Ages, gabion baskets were round-shaped cages made of wickerwork with top and bottom lids, filled with soil, and were used as military protection, fortification and fortification. These early gabion baskets were used to protect artillery units. In addition to being lightweight, cylinders made from wickerwork were relatively easy to transport, especially if they were produced in sizes to fit inside one another. They were placed vertically on the field where they would be used and brought to the desired position. They were then filled with earth to create an effective wall around the ball.

Today, gabion baskets are often used to protect forward-end bases against explosives, partial and indirect fire such as mortar and artillery fire. Examples of areas where gabions are used extensively in forward-end bases are dormitories, dining halls, or places where many unprotected soldiers are together.
